Amusing ourselves to death

This webcomic connects to our class in the way that it is talking about how times are changing. The webcomic reveals how the fears that we face and the things we are afraid of becoming have almost completely flipped. What we have talked in class is how what people are interested in and what we like to watch on TV has changed into things that we think is wrong (such as honey boo boo). I think the most interesting thing about this webcomic is in the title "Amusing ourselves to death" Huxley even said that he feared that what we love will ruin us.  What we love these days is technology, and we made technology. The most common use to this is for amusement. So the title "amusing ourselves to death" completely reflects what Huxley is afraid of. The comparison between what Huxley and Orwell said really interested me. I probably read this about ten times. I was seeing all of these extremes and I couldn't help thinking how almost perfect our society would be if we found middle ground between these two extremes. If there was no bans on books, if we could get just enough information where we could help everyone but not too much where we would become reduced to passivity. If we knew the truth but it wasn't  drowned away. These things seem like it would almost fix everything and help everyone.

In my opinion this was written as a webcomic because people are more likely to read a webcomic over an article, because it is more visually appealing, which also supports the argument that people are not finding as much use in books, and things like that because they would rather watch a comic strip. So in order to get the point across he/she but this in the form that people are more likely to read. This presentation made me realize as I was reading it what Huxley is trying to warn of us, and that formed more of a realism in my opinion. I think presenting this as a webcomic was an excellent choice, due to how it reflects the article.

My Social Media identity

I will be looking into my social media identity through Facebook

Honey boo boo

Albom linked these to things because he views that more people are interested in watching TV, and not even considering what they are actually watching. People are loosing their morals of what is right and wrong when they see it on TV, and people are willing to do outrages things or not do anything in order to get "good footage". Albom seemed disappointed to see what people are becoming, and almost seemed in aw on how people could actually allow this to happen. I personally got sick to my stomach watching both, how people could allow a little girl to do what she does, and how people could just sit back and video tape. I feel like that I am even more discouraged about america and people in it then Albom is. I feel like people are drawn to this type of television because the american people love to watch the "outrages" sides of people lives. I do not believe that people are becoming apathetic. I think that people are understanding to this and think that it is somewhat acceptable because it is on TV, and i believe that people have the false thought that if it is on TV that means that it is ok, and think that if it was to bad the law would stop or they TV networks would refuse to show it.

Reality TV

Reality television is not what it says it is. There is almost nothing "real" about reality television. In order for a reality TV program to be successful you are not able to actually show reality due to the fact that people would not be interested in it. People like to watch things that interest them and watching people do what they do every day. So people are forced to find people that live abnormal lives in order to make it more interesting. This at a long-term effect changed even the people they are video taping. In order for their “reality television” program to become more successful the people start to act more and more abnormal. This may improve their ratings but it makes the “reality” part of “reality” television less real. So when people watch this they begin to get a false sense of what is real. This makes people feel that their lives are boring and how people on the “reality” television do so much more. With people using technology more and more makes having a false sense of reality dangerous. That is because since more and more people are spending the majority of their time on computers, and television, people can make this false sense of reality almost real to them. By only talking to people who live their lives like they do on TV. This makes them believe even more that, that is how people live their lives. Now all of this can seriously affect peoples lives by either making them act like people do on TV because that’s how they think they are suppose to live, or making them jealous of those people who do live their lives like that which can lead into a type of depression. Now reality TV doesn’t affect my life too much due to the fact that I do not watch those programs and the majority of the people I spend time with also don’t watch those types of things. So I do not pay much attention to how hose people on TV live their “reality” lives. My overall feeling about this is that reality TV has a negative effect on young people’s lives. People that can be easily manipulated with television and things on the Internet (which is most likely teenagers) are more likely to create this false reality that I talked about before, and are more likely to have the consequences that I talked about.
