Amusing ourselves to death

This webcomic connects to our class in the way that it is talking about how times are changing. The webcomic reveals how the fears that we face and the things we are afraid of becoming have almost completely flipped. What we have talked in class is how what people are interested in and what we like to watch on TV has changed into things that we think is wrong (such as honey boo boo). I think the most interesting thing about this webcomic is in the title "Amusing ourselves to death" Huxley even said that he feared that what we love will ruin us.  What we love these days is technology, and we made technology. The most common use to this is for amusement. So the title "amusing ourselves to death" completely reflects what Huxley is afraid of. The comparison between what Huxley and Orwell said really interested me. I probably read this about ten times. I was seeing all of these extremes and I couldn't help thinking how almost perfect our society would be if we found middle ground between these two extremes. If there was no bans on books, if we could get just enough information where we could help everyone but not too much where we would become reduced to passivity. If we knew the truth but it wasn't  drowned away. These things seem like it would almost fix everything and help everyone.

In my opinion this was written as a webcomic because people are more likely to read a webcomic over an article, because it is more visually appealing, which also supports the argument that people are not finding as much use in books, and things like that because they would rather watch a comic strip. So in order to get the point across he/she but this in the form that people are more likely to read. This presentation made me realize as I was reading it what Huxley is trying to warn of us, and that formed more of a realism in my opinion. I think presenting this as a webcomic was an excellent choice, due to how it reflects the article.

  1. definitely agree about the more visually appealing aspect of the Web-comic versus the black and white print of an article with just words!

  2. I like that you said there is a middle between the two extremes that exists but it's just that we need to find it and everything would be solved. It's so true that there's a solution to our problem out there, but getting to it seems almost impossible.
